The Kind Of God We Worship.
One day, a man named Lummu washed his face, walked into his room, and locked the door behind him. He knelt beside his bed, folded his hands, and prayed, "Dear God, please give me a rabbit."
For the next three
days, Lummu remained inside, confident that God would answer his exact prayer.
On the morning of the
third day, he heard a loud knock on his door. Excited, Lummu hurried to the
door. Standing outside was a delivery man holding a clipboard.
"I have a
delivery from God," the man said. "Please sign here."
Lummu eagerly signed
the papers and looked around, expecting to see a small, fluffy rabbit.
"Where's the
rabbit?" he asked.
The delivery man
smiled. "There isn't a rabbit. God has sent you an elephant instead."
Lummu's eyes widened
in disbelief. "An elephant?" he exclaimed. "How is an elephant,
ten times bigger than my house, supposed to fit inside it?"
The delivery man
simply picked up his clipboard, turned around, and walked away without saying a
word.
Lummu stood frozen in
the doorway, staring at the huge elephant, wondering whether this was a
blessing, a mistake, or the beginning of something he could never have
imagined.
Twenty years later,
Lummu sat at an old wooden desk with a pen in his hand. Time had given him
answers that confusion never could. He unfolded a sheet of paper and began to
write.
“We Worship a Crazy
God. Before you misunderstand my title, let me explain. When I say that God is ‘crazy,’
I do not mean that He lacks wisdom or order. I mean that His goodness is so
extraordinary, so unexpected, and so far beyond human reasoning that our
limited minds struggle to comprehend it. His goodness is so overwhelming that
the only word I could think of was crazy.”
“God has a habit of
catching people off guard. He does not merely answer prayers, He often answers
them in ways we never imagined. We ask for enough, and He thinks about
abundance.”
“Many years ago, I
prayed for a rabbit. A rabbit seemed reasonable. It was small, manageable, and
exactly what I wanted. Three days later, a delivery man knocked on my door with
a delivery from God. After I signed the papers, he calmly informed me that instead
of a rabbit, God had sent me an elephant. For years, I thought God had
misunderstood my prayer. Now I realize that it was I who misunderstood God.”
“I wanted something
that would fit inside my little life. God instead gave me something too big for
the life I had imagined.”
“The problem was
never the elephant. The problem was the size of my expectations. We often build
tiny rooms for an infinite God. We expect Him to think within the limits of our
imagination. God delights in doing things that make people shake their heads
and say, "Only God could have done that."
“Looking back over
twenty years, I have learned that many of God's greatest gifts first arrive
disguised as inconveniences, impossibilities, or unanswered questions.
Sometimes the blessing is too big for the life we've built.”
“If He had given me
the rabbit I requested, I would have thanked Him for a day. By giving me the
elephant, He taught me lessons that have lasted a lifetime.”
“That is why today
I can say with confidence:
We worship a God
whose generosity exceeds our prayers.
A God whose plans
exceed our imagination.
A God whose answers
often look nothing like our requests.
A God who refuses
to be limited by our small expectations.”
“His goodness is so
extravagant that it surprises us. His mercy is so abundant that it overwhelms
us. His grace is so relentless that it pursues us.”
“If that doesn't
sound crazy, then I don't know what does.”
“So the next time
God seems to answer a different prayer than the one you prayed, don't be too
quick to think He has ignored you.”
“And perhaps, one
day, like me, you will look back and smile, not because God gave you exactly
what you requested, but because He gave you something far greater than you
could have imagined.”
“That is the kind
of God we worship.”
